Written in the early twentieth century at a time when travel was always an adventure and in most cases a luxury; this quote resonates perhaps more today than when it was written. There may be many subtle layers of meaning which I have missed, but in my uncomplicated mind, the simple difference between wandering and travel is purpose. Whether it is my mind or body wandering, it is without purpose, it is because of, or for distraction. I/we travel with a purpose; ultimately to get somewhere, and this should provide some level of satisfaction and if we travel with the purpose of learning and absorbing from local environments, people and cultures then this will – or should – lead to a level of fulfilment.
