Verona – a night at the Opera

Every summer, the world’s most popular operas are performed in the spectacular surroundings of the Verona Arena. My first experience of the Verona Opera was twenty years ago this summer, the day after my wedding (but that’s another story), and the ambience couldn’t have been more perfect for me and my wife. We treated ourselves to the more expensive Silver Stalls seating with a perfect view of the stage and moonlit sky. I’m told that the Step Seating around the arena is ideal for small groups and families who want to enjoy a slightly more chilled and less formal experience – and much more affordable!

Set in ancient Egypt. The Egyptians have captured and enslaved Aida, an Ethiopian princess. An Egyptian military commander, Radamès, struggles to choose between his love for her and his loyalty to the King of Egypt. The sets are stunning – and everything is done on a huge scale. Walk around the arena and you will see large pieces of sets from various performances – ready to be craned into the arena as required. 

My wife was five months pregnant which was fairly visible – and with baby pushing on bladder she had to make a journey to the WC during one of the short – set change- breaks (not generally encouraged). One of the Arena team spotted her and quickly guided her down the stairs and on her return when the opera had recommenced – she was given a chair to sit and watch at the entrance area until the next break allowed them to guide her back to her seat. All very classy! That’s why we love Italy so much! 

The opera was spectacular and the applause joyous – and particularly enthusiastic from a few, who we thought might be a claque (a group of paid applauders).

The crowd dispersed to various eateries around Verona (there are plenty of restaurants around the Arena square – but reservations are highly recommended) humming arias and delighting at the Van Gogh night sky. 

The summer opera season is a great time to visit Verona and ticket prices are not expensive – especially if you book the step seating (taking or purchasing a cushion is recommended). 

The 2022 Opera Season includes performances of Aida, Carmen, Nabucco, La Traviata, and Turandot.
